January Flicker Box Review

It's FRIDAY!! OMG. I'm so excited and I don't even know why. It's not like I have a huge weekend of events planned or anything. Nope. I just love the weekend and the fact that the hubs is home and I can maybe talk him into one (or ten) house projects..it's all part of my evil plan! (CUE EVIL LAUGH!) okay, but seriously. I've been meaning to getting around to reviewing this months Flicker Box, and considering it's almost February, I guess now is the time.

I really LOVED the theme of this months box. It was Lumberjack Themed! The candles and scents are meant to resemble cozy nights spent at the lake house or log cabin. You know, if only I had either of those things. But these scents helped me pretend, perfect really since we were snowed in all this week.

The candles come in a plain box with a Flicker Box stamp in the corner. I like the simplicity, honestly. I can never open my box fast enough!

I was really excited to see so many different candles and scents, the cool thing about Flicker Box is they really focus on small business' and local candle makers which is just awesome. I really love that they include an information card to learn more about each candle and where it comes from.

I was really obsessed with one scent in particular this month..I'm such a sucker for fresh, clean scents that open up the senses (haha! I FEEL so proper saying things like "open up my senses!)

I seriously am burning candles ALL the time, so it didn't take me long to burn through these. I could have done without the Hawk & Hatchet scent. It just smelled off to me and I didn't even burn it. I'll save it and give it as a gift;)

I really love this subscription box! I'm so excited each month to see the different themes. The boxes are priced at $39.95 but I have an exclusive discount for TGF readers! My Flicker Box was nice enough to offer you guys 15% off your first subscription box with code BOX4U!!

Thanks for stopping by and reading ya'll! I hope you have the best weekend! I'm hoping to put the finishing touches on Savanna's Big Girl Room Makeover so that maybe I can share it with you guys soon! Are you following me on SnapChat? @glamfarmhouse I'll be snapping all weekend! Love to have you come hang out!

The Glam Farmhouse Living Room Tour

This post has been a long time coming, I've oddly never done a "tour" post before..so I might not be super great at it, just roll with me..okay?

Where the living room is currently there used to be a back porch of sorts, so we knew when we bought the house we wanted to add an addition which would be the living room now, and our master bedroom upstairs. Before the back porch was literally falling down, so we just tore everything down and started new.

This picture ^^^ was actually two summers ago, when the fence was new and we hadn't stained the new deck yet. But you can see on the left what I mean by falling down.
In the end, everything worked out okay:)

I really like the idea that you "step down" into the living room. I don't know why, but I've always liked houses with living rooms like that. I'm really thankful we have large windows and doors in this room because unlike the rest of the house, it gets LOTS of natural light.

I'm not going to lie to you guys. It took me a while (almost 2 whole years actually) to figure out which direction I wanted to go in decorating wise.. but once I decided to stop decorating and start "collecting" things started falling into place. Almost every single piece of furniture in this space is thrifted, or DIY. I love mixing new and old pieces to make a space feel like it really is MINE.

So here we go, are you ready?

Let's start with one of the obvious focal pieces in our living room. The Sofa, I literally get asked about it ALL THE TIME, so much in fact, that I made a post about it, I get asked by people that come over, from people on Insta, and Facebook. It's probably my favorite purchase EVER. The Ektorp Sectional runs for $899. I didn't pay $899. Nope. I did not. I paid $200 from someone selling on Craigslist. DO YOU KNOW HOW FREAKING EXCITED I WAS? INSANELY EXCITED. I'M STILL EXCITED RIGHT NOW WHICH IS WHY I'M WRITING IN ALL CAPS!!!

For those wondering, I don't have the white cover, I tried that, it didn't work for me. I have this color here. And I LOVE it so so much!

This is a space most of you have never seen before, I just never felt it was special enough to photograph, and yes, Disney Junior is on..like ALWAYS. Tv's aren't really fun to photograph, but we all have them (at least I think so?)So I had to make this part of "the tour".

The TV/MEDIA stand was a chalk paint project, I still love this piece. It was so fun seeing it come together. And the dresser was FREE. I just bought the paint to paint it! Those are seriously the best things. This one is painted with Annie Sloans Duck Egg Play and Old White. It's half and half mixed together to get this pale blue farmhouse color.

As you can probably tell, I like decorating in layers, I don't know why.. I typically start with a runner and then use placemats and things like that for texture and patterns.

Another thrifted piece was this big cozy Ikea Ektorp chair. I paid $50 on a swap and sell site! I just bought a new cover! It's seriously my favorite corner in the whole house!

I'll try to list as many sources as I can for the things I get asked about the most.

Sofa- Ikea Ektorp
Magnolia Wreath, Black Lantern, Wood Lantern, Olive Stems, Our Nest Pillow-Decor Steals
Tan Curtains, Red Wreath, Plaid Blanket on Ladder, Basket on Table, Olive Bucket and Milk Can- Target
Lamp, Pillows on Chair, Throw Blankets- Home Goods
Window Blinds- Home Depot
Mercury Glass Candle Holder, White End Table, Coffee Table-Pier 1 Imports
TV/MEDIA stand, Blanket Ladder, Tan Side Table- DIY

Did I get everything? Probably not. HA! So, what do you guys think? I'd love to hear from ya'll! Leave a comment below or message me on Insta!!

Also, follow @glamfarmhouse on Snap Chat to see what is happening at TGF right now! I'm always up to something;) love you all! xoxo

How To Clean Your Tile Grout

Hey everyone! I know, the title of today's post IS SO EXCITING. You are seriously all probably on the edge of your seats!!!

I finally ventured out of the house today, we went to Panera Bread for lunch and then went to Target for some necessitates. I must be weird, because I feel like the stores are so boring right now..I guess it's just the transition from Christmas to winter. But I'm over it. As anxious as I was to get out of the house, I couldn't get back home fast enough. I'm such a homebody, I swear!

On the bright side of things, I got a pretty little package on my door step today! Yup, my new Erin Condren planner came today and I'm freaking out! If you follow me on Snapchat (@glamfarmhouse) you probably have an idea of how excited I got. Maybe a little too excited. But that's how I roll. I mentioned on Instagram earlier I was feeling blah, Savanna was sick the other day so I guess I'm getting whatever she had. My stomach is feeling all gross so I'm stocking up on the Vitamin D! Hoping I kick whatever this is soon! I guess it's just that time of year when literally everyone is sick. GROSS.

Anyway, I used to do this thing on insta where I shared some of my favorite cleaning tips once a week, I don't know why I stopped.. but I decided to start back up. Because we all could benefit from a tip or two now and then when it comes to cleaning..maybe one day, I'll tell you all how clean your house in 10 seconds with your eyes closed, but currently, I unfortunately DON'T know how to do that YET. But if I figure it out, you'll be the first to know. Umk?!

So, you've probably heard of this little "tip" on how to clean tile. Maybe you've pinned or saved it before and you just never tried it. I'm here to tell you, IT WORKS. PS. let's leave the comments about how stupid I was to get white grout to ourselves, okay? Because seriously, I can't wait to redo this bathroom and say goodbye to white grout FOREVER. But. FOR NOW. I'm stuck with it..and that means I'm stuck scrubbing and cleaning.

I literally scrub this floor at minimum once a week, but the grout gets so dirty SO fast. I hate it! So obviously I've tried everything to scrub, scour, and clean the tile. Until one day, I saw a bleach pen in the cleaning section at Target (surprise!!) and decided to give it a shot. Would it work? Who really knew.. but I bought two in case I decided this was the miracle I'd been waiting for.

Turns out, it is..and it was! See for yourself. (Don't judge me with the dirty grout..I swear, I CLEAN IT ALL THE TIME!!!!!)

IT'S a miracle!!!

Seriously, check out how dirty the grout was..

and how pretty and white it is, after I let the bleach pen sit for about 15 minutes.

Best part is, the bleach literally does all the work for you! I did use an old toothbrush to scrub the bleach out of the grout, but I hardly even had to scrub. It literally just worked by itself. I. AM. SOLD.

I'm going to do the shower tile next, it's not nearly as bad as the floor but I'm just so excited to use bleach pens now for everything. Mom life is SO MUCH fun. (Can you sense my sarcasm?)

So that's how I spent by day folks, going to lunch and then getting excited to come home and scrub my floors. WHEN DID THIS BECOME MY LIFE?

Have you tried this before? How did it turn out for you? I'd love to hear!!! As always, thanks for hanging out with me today! xoxo

Vanilla Mint Play-Doh {Savanna Plays}

Happy Tuesday! Although we've been able to get out of the house now, it's still been cold and the roads are still iffy. Not to mention that there is literally piles of snow taller then I am, everywhere. So, I mean. Ew. The idea of getting Savanna bundled up along with myself is just so NOT appealing to me right now. We are on our third snow day, but it's not like I even realize it because Nick basically just sleeps all day and then wakes up at 2 in the afternoon and comes downstairs and eats all our food. Ah, the life of a teenager.

Okay, so after sharing this picture of Miss Savanna playing with some awesome looking play-doh, on Instagram and on Facebook, I got so many requests for the recipe, and since it's sort of complicated..(I mean not really, but there is a good amount of ingredients..) I just decided to write up a quick post about it. I know this isn't a typical TGF post, and although I'm seriously obsessed and in love with all things decor related, One of my other passions has always been making and doing things with my babies. Nick is over it, obviously, but Savanna is just starting to get excited about all the fun things! Making play-doh is probably her most favorite thing right now, and she will literally sit and play for hours.

This Recipe is by far the most favorite I've tried yet. It's as soft and smooth as butter, has great consistency, isn't sticky and smells AMAZING. (I hate the smell of normal play-doh.) So I'm always adding different scents and colors to make all different kinds. It's so simple and fun!

Here's what you'll need:

2 Cups Flour
1/2 Cup of Salt
2 Tablespoons Cream of Tarter
1 Tablespoon (or more!) of glitter
1.5 tablespoons of Vanillin (you can also use vanilla extract)
2 tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons of Glycerin (this adds the shine and makes it soft)
1 1/2 cups of boiling water
5 Drops of Peppermint Extract

Place all DRY ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.

Add WET ingredients and give the mixture a quick whisk.

Right now, the mixture will seem too wet and too sticky. DON'T ADD MORE FLOUR.

Leave the semi mixed dough on the counter approx 10 minutes or until cooled
Once cooled, dump the mixture onto the counter and knead really well. The dough will lose it's stickiness as it continues to be kneaded and cooled.
Knead for about 3 minutes or until it reaches perfect consistency.

And there you have it! Amazingly soft, yummy smelling play-doh! Perfect for little hands! I  like to give Savanna all sorts of creative materials to play with, we always have gems from the dollar store on hand, little figures, small twigs, pom poms, etc. She also thinks it's really fun to use stamps with play-doh. We have a child sized roller and cookie cutters that she likes to use also. You can be so creative and it teaches little babes all sorts of awesome skills. So have fun with it!

I will be announcing this weeks Giveaway on Instagram so be sure you are following along! It's something super awesome!!

Valentine's Day Hot Chocolate Station

Hey beauties and babes! Well, unfortunately, we are still snowed in and I'm going a little stir crazy. I got a new shipment of chalk paint today so that put me in a better mood. I'm working on a little something for Savannas Room Makeover and seriously hoping it wraps up soon cause..I'm sort of kinda over it. We got over 2 feet of snow which is honestly, just insanity.

Anyway, Last night on Instagram I showed you guys a little peek at my Valentine's Day Hot Chocolate Station. You've probably established that I love Holidays by now, even the sometimes cheesy and corny ones. So it should come as no surprise that I did a little decorating for LOVE day. After telling myself for weeks I wouldn't cave and buy a ridiculous amount of items with cute little pink hearts, and cute shaped garlands and banners..I caved.

What IS it about this Holiday that just sucks us women right on in? I don't know if its all the pink shiny things or if it's just the fact that no matter how much we try, we just LOVE, well..LOVE. At least I do.

Valentine's Day is the one time of year where I can get away with a little pink in my decor, without hearing a bunch of slack from the boys in my house. (Thank goodness I have Savanna now, to love pink with me..) Although Nick doesn't pick on me too much, usually when he notices something different he just rolls his eyes and looks in the other direction. MEN. They don't get it. But you do! Right?

Honestly, I had zero intentions of decorating much for Valentine's Day but while casually strolling Target for the 5th time in one week, I saw them putting out the most beautiful display of heart shaped gold and pink items I've ever seen. So I kept circling the space as they were unpacking, ya know..like a hawk just waiting to attack her prey. And when he was all done unpacking all the items, I flocked to the end of the aisle, throwing my arms around all the pretty things.

"OHHHH..." I said to myself. "It's so pretty.." I thought. I COULD TOTALLY DO SO MUCH WITH ALL OF THIS.

So, the little pink flower heart on the mirror, The tassel garland and the "love today" mug came home with me. (Along with a few other Dollar Spot Items that I mean, I just couldn't pass up..) Come on, $3? They were practically giving the stuff away! (I know. I have a problem, but let's not talk about it right now, okay?!)

So here's what we have going on now. I will probably tweak a few things but I love how glam and pink and glittery and shiny it is.

The cake stand I used for Savanna's First Princess Fairy tale Party, I found it by accident..(and by accident, I mean it fell on my head when I opened up my "decor" closet) I thought it would be so pretty for Valentine's Day. I have an obsession with cake stands. I seriously have so many! And most of them have never even seen a cake. I just like to sit things on them. They are seriously so awesome when you have a space that needs some height. I use cake stands so much!

Like this white and super versitle one from Pier 1 Imports. Super cheap and I can seriously use it in so many different ways!

I went ALL out decorating for Valentine's Day in the kitchen. And by all out, I mean I hung a Valentine's Day Towel. Hold the applause everyone. I know I outdid myself.

So, what do you guys think?!! Do you decorate for Valentine's Day?! I'd love to see! Tag me in photo on Instagram or leave me a comment below and let's CHAT! You can also find me on Facebook at The Glam Farmhouse

Ikea Ektorp Sofa Review

One of the things I get asked about ALL THE TIME, Is the sofa in our living room. Let's start off by telling you guys where the Sofa is from(even though you probably gathered that information from the title of the post, hahaha sorry.)

THIS is the IKEA Ektorp Sofa. It retails for $899 currently on Ikea.

I managed to snag this one on Craigslist for $200 (yes!!! $200!!) and all I did was buy some new covers for it. I don't know how old it was then, all I know is that we've had it for 3 years since and it's holding up so well. It's the perfect place to snuggle up, read stories, drink wine, watch football, watch movies, whatever!

Have seriously received SO many requests for this post in particular. I feel like I'm always repeating myself when I'm answering the questions so, here, I'm going to try to sum it all up in one little blog post.

1. HOW do you have a white sofa with kids?

A: I have a toddler, 3 dogs, a messy husband and a preteen boy. This means I DON'T keep it clean. I'm going to be honest with you and tell you that I'm always wiping or washing. This is why having a light colored sofa actually made MORE sense to me. I can wash it if it gets messy (which is often) and I don't have to be so uptight about eating/drinking etc. in the living room. Which means we can actually LIVE and I'm not a basket case always saying "Don't do this!" or "Stop doing that!" It's not the easiest thing taking off the covers and putting them on, but it's not the end of the world either, and I love that I can just wash it, and get it smelling all clean and fresh again. Something you can't do with a normal typical couch.

Not only that, but if the covers get too beat up, I can always replace it. The color I have currently, isn't actually WHITE. It's This Color. It's a really light beige, I've had the white cover and now that..was really hard to maintain. The beige is so much better, and is still super light and neutral which is what I love.

2. How often do you wash the covers and what do you use?

A: I've had the white covers, the gray covers and currently the beige covers. Of all of them, beige is probably my favorite. I like the light coloring but it doesn't feel as harsh as white. It feels a bit more warm, if that makes sense. Ikea says this particular cover isn't washeable, but I've had it for 2 years and it's held up just fine being thrown in the washer once a month (or sometimes more!) I just wash in a cup of vinegar to clean and keep it smelling fresh.

3. Is it comfortable?

A: I think brand new, these sofas definitely need to be "broken in" Thankfully, ours was used so it was already comfy when we purchased. My husband was worried it wouldn't be comfortable but it totally is. It's not very wide though, so that's something to consider. My sofa is probably one of my most favorite places ever to curl up with a blanket and read a book (or just scroll through my Instagram feed!) After 3 years of use from us, I love it more then ever, it's so comfortable to flop down in!

4. What about height? My husband is tall, is the sofa short?

A: The Sofa is a little shorter then other sofas, but only a little. It's something I only noticed when our 6'2 friend came over to visit. He mentioned about the height, but then went out and bought the exact sofa, so it obviously didn't bother him too much. As far as width, the couch could be a little wider, but it feels the same as other sofas.

The PROS of this Sofa outweigh any of the Cons.

Can easily change the style (with a new cover, throw pillows, blankets..etc.)
Fits Almost Any Decor Style

Washing can sometimes be tedious
Couch could be a little wider

Would I purchase this again? In a heart beat! Actually we are purchasing another set of these sofas for our game room when it's completed. I really love that when I get bored I can switch up the covers, which is really awesome for someone like me, because I get bored. A lot. Ha!

I hope I was able to help some of you decide if the Ektorp is right for you and your family! If you have any other questions please feel free to shot me a message on The Glam Farmhouse or leave me a comment below. You can also visit The Glam Farmhouse on Facebook because we love social media! ;)

How To Decorate for Winter

Winter is hard, like. Really hard. At least up here in the North it is. The cold temps and short dreary days put us all in sort of a blah mood, at least that's what happens to me. So in the winter, I pass the time and try to make sitting in the house more often a little bit more bearable by filling my planner up with projects and making ridiculously long outrageous to-do lists. It also helps to start planning our upcoming trips, preferably to warmer and sunnier places. My doctor prescribes a Vitamin D tablet for me to take during these long months, and oddly, they help. Like, a whole lot. To the point of when I don't take them I can feel my energy levels draining. Gross.

Something else I do to pass the time? Decorate. Obvi. It's like THE best (although Mr. TGF would probably say different..) hobby to have. I shared our Winter Dining Room in a post last week, I talked a little bit about some winter elements that I use when going from Christmas to Winter. For me, personally, there are a few elements that Winter Decorating has to include..

1. Greenery. It could be fake, it could be real..It doesn't really matter. Evergreen is one of the things that you can put up for Christmas and leave up all Winter if you really want too. I currently have greenery in several different areas right now, you can incorporate it anywhere really.

2. Pine Cones. Again, another simple, and possibly, FREE thing. You can always use some fake spray snow to give pine cones a frosted more Wintery look, but even just plain, they are still really awesome. I use them in dough bowls, in baskets, and several other sneaky places that I just want to make feel more Wintery. I managed to snag a bag of these Pine Cones at Home Goods earlier in the season and when I bought them, I knew I could just do SO much with them. I used them on this tray from Painted Fox, and again in my farmhouse buckets, and AGAIN in my trusty dough bowl..

and all of these things come together? You get a gorgeous Winter Display!

3. Blue. What is it about the color blue that makes things feel Wintery? I don't know. But it just works, a fun way to incorporate this color into your scheme is with mason jars. They are just so pretty and versatile and can be used in so many different ways! The color is so pretty, and I keep my mason jars out pretty much year round. They just always work. I find mine at local antique shops all the time and I can never seem to get out of buying 1 (or 8) of them every time I go. I often look for different styles and logos to find older ones. There is something really cool to me about thinking of all of the things the jars have probably held over time.

4. Mercury Glass. I've had an obsession with Mercury Glass for a long time now. I feel like it can work with literally SO many different decorating styles. Plus it adds a fun mix with my usually rustic style.

My most recent Winter Centerpiece was this one I put together today, and currently..I'm obsessed. Cause let's be real..I love candles and baskets. (seriously, I have a candle obsession, it's a legit problem but that post is for another time and another place..)

THIS is what happens when I get bored. Things start moving around and I go shopping. And by shopping, I mean, I shop my house. It's one of my favorite things to do! And it makes me love the things I already have all over again! (don't get it twisted though, this girl still loves a good trip to Target, duh. Who Doesn't.)

Those three simple things can give you a really pretty Winter Vignette and none of them cost a ton of money!! What are some of your favorite things to decorate with for Winter? Let's chat, you can find me on Instagram most of the time The Glam Farmhouse or on Facebook! (PS. If you aren't following me on Instagram already, head over there TONIGHT because I'll be making a BIG announcement!) xoxo
