Last week, I told you I was going to start sharing some of my favorite cleaning tips with you every week. I shared a little shortcut to cleaning tile grout and you LOVED it. For obvious reasons. Who doesn't love easy and quick effective ways to clean? I mean, I know for sure I don't want to spend every day of my life cleaning. But I totally want a clean house, and I obviously can't afford a cleaning company every week.. So here I am! With another cleaning tip today!
This one is another super simple, duh moment, probably for most of you. Like I said last week, these are just little tips and tricks I've learned while attempting to keep my house clean over the years with kids, and just in general.
It's no secret that baking soda is literally awesome when it comes to cleaning. I seriously, always have a huge bag or box on hand because I literally use it for cleaning everything! Mix it with dish soap to clean out your ovens, use it in the bathtub with vinegar and lemon juice to scour the tub, use it in the sink with bleach to make it sparkle. I LOVE IT. And I think everyone should always have some on hand.
That being said, this is probably my most favorite use for baking soda. I have two kids, ages 2 and 12, a messy hubby and 3 dogs. Combine all of those things and you could probably guess that my carpet doesn't always stay clean or smell the best. I've tried so many things, I simply can't shampoo my carpets every week and we are eventually hoping to switch our last carpeted room (the living room!) to hardwood asap.. but until then, I'm left trying to keep it looking decent and smelling good. Not an easy task.
Enter le baking soda, yes, my baking soda is french.. it's so fancy. It's not snobby though, it's really low key and down to earth.
So now for the shining moment.. Are you ready to find out how to keep your carpets smelling fresh and clean? Of course you are!
Step one: Sprinkle Baking Soda on carpets, you can cover an entire surface if you choose, or just focus on a spot with an odor.
Step Two: Let the baking soda sit and absorb odors for a minimum of 1 hour, but I usually leave it for two. I'll go and do other chores while I wait for the baking soda to do the dirty work for me.
Step Three: Vacuum Up baking soda.
Step Four: NO MORE ODORS!!!
It's a miracle! This method has ALWAYS worked for me, even after Savanna started potty training and we had um, more accidents then I'd like to admit on the carpet. If the scent is REALLY bad in a certain spot, dab with vinegar before applying baking soda, the two combined work as a KILLER combo to kick odors to the curb! (OMG, I totally sound like a commercial, I swear this post isn't sponsored in any way! haha)
I even created a pin-able post so you can share the L-O-V-E.
While baking soda eliminates carpet odors, one thing it doesn't do is, give you a nice scent. For that I just add some Gain Fireworks in my vacuum cleaner, just a half cup or so will do! I put it inside my vacuum and every time I vacuum, it smells so awesome! And it lasts FOREVER. I'm a sucker for smelly things so as you can imagine, this excites me a ridiculous amount!
The life of a Housewife.. exciting stuff, right?!
